Nutrition is surrounded by myths and misconceptions that can sabotage even the most motivated among us. In this article, we break down the 5 most common myths I encounter in coaching.
Myth #1: Carbs make you fat. This is probably the most widespread belief, yet it's wrong. Carbohydrates are your body's primary fuel source. What matters is the quantity and quality of carbs you eat.
Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are excellent carb sources that provide energy, fiber, and essential nutrients. Drastically cutting them can lead to fatigue, irritability, and poor performance.
Myth #2: You need to eat every 3 hours to boost your metabolism. Studies show that meal frequency has minimal impact on metabolism. What truly matters is your total daily caloric intake.
Myth #3: Fat-free products are healthier. When fat is removed, sugar or additives are often added to compensate for taste. A balanced approach with healthy fats (avocado, nuts, olive oil) is much better.
Myth #4: You must eat clean 100% of the time. An overly rigid approach often leads to frustration and binge eating. The 80/20 principle works much better long term.
Intermittent fasting, for example, can benefit some people, but it's not a magic solution. What works is consistency and listening to your body.
Another common myth: supplements are essential. In reality, a varied and balanced diet covers the vast majority of our nutritional needs.
Protein powder can be convenient, but it doesn't replace real food. Prioritize natural sources: meat, fish, eggs, legumes.
The key to good nutrition isn't perfection, but consistency. Eating well 80% of the time and treating yourself the rest is a sustainable approach.
In coaching, we work together to identify your limiting beliefs around nutrition and replace them with science-based habits.
